The Bridge 19-40 Union Canal Society has a shared history with other local canal societies which campaigned to re-open the once derelict Lowland Canals for navigation and the enjoyment and well-being of the many people who can now relax this wonderful green space. 

Boaters, walkers, joggers, cyclists, fishermen, paddle boarders and canoeists are just some of the many people who make daily use of the canal towpath or the waterway itself. 

Run solely by volunteers, Bridge 19-40 helps to maintain the canal and its surrounds, promotes awareness of the canal and its benefits and helps people to understand its history.  We encourage people to experience the tranquility of the canal from the water on our passenger boat Bluebell, a 45ft narrowboat.  

Roseann is our work boat, used for environmental activities along the canal, such as litter picks, trimming vegetation and removing obstacles from the water. 

Our only sources of funding are membership fees, fares from our boat trips, charters and donations. 

As social distancing during the Covid 19 pandemic is impossible within the limited space on a narrowboat, we will be unable to run boat trips – our main source of income - during 2020. 

This is the main reasons Bridge 19-40 has joined The Big Splash campaign. We hope you will support us during this difficult period. 

We are so looking forward to welcoming passengers on board again when it is safe to do so.
