Scottish Canal Volunteers ~ Helmsmen & Canal Maintenance

DescriptionOur volunteers have access to 2 dedicated boats, one called "Lochrin" which operates between the Forth & Clyde and Union canal.   They have many uses, from litter picking to vegetation management.   Working Crew and Helmsmen are required to keep these boats operating on canal maintenance.

LocationForth & Clyde and Union Canal

TaskBased on a workboat you will assist Scottish Canals with general maintenance of both canals.  From vegetation clearance to painting structures to crewing the boat, there is a job for every ability.

Time CommitmentHaving a flexible approach to time management is key.  We would prefer people who can commit ling term due to the nature of this project:  We are happy to discuss this further with you.

Skills Required
  • Punctual time keeper
  • Willing to work outdoors
  • Able to travel (boat will be moored in different locations)
  • Reasonably fit
  • Helmsmen cert (training available)
  • Able to use hand tools
  • Good team player
  • Good communicator
  • Mechanical knowledge  (to help look after boat engine)
  • Knowledge of boats – not essestintal
  • Be able to make a good cuppa!
