Scottish Canals Volunteer of the Year Award has been created to recognise an outstanding established and regular volunteer contribution to maintaining, promoting, or working on part of Scotland’s canal network.

The Volunteer of the Year will be a person nominated by the general public, or representatives of organisations with an interest in the canal network, and will probably have regularly gone above and beyond the efforts of the many volunteers operating in or around the Scottish Canals.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for selection as the Volunteer of the Year, the nominated volunteer must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • The candidate must carry out volunteer work on Scotland’s canals, tow paths, and / or the associated environment
  • The candidate must be an un-paid volunteer
  • Candidate will probably be part of a voluntary group or organisation or alternatively may be an individual person, but will be someone who has made an outstanding contribution to Scotland’s canal network.
  • Nominators must demonstrate how their candidate has gone above and beyond to encourage and facilitate a tangible and immediate improvement in the canal network or operation
  • Nominators must demonstrate that their candidates work encourages and delivers permanent benefit to the operation and appeal of the canals
  • Nominators must demonstrate their candidate’s commitment to Scotland’s canal network
  • The deadline for all nominations for the Volunteer of the Year is Friday 25th September 2020 @ 7:00pm.   We regret that entries received after this deadline can not be considered.

Guidance Notes:

  • All nominations must be submitted to Scottish Canals Volunteer Awards 2020 using the on-line nomination form or by email submission in accordance with the following email guidelines.
  • The Volunteer of the Year will be awarded annually
  • No self-nominations are permitted; nominations must be submitted on behalf of another person who is not a member of the nominator’s immediate family
  • The nominator must provide the contact information, including email address and telephone number for the nominated Volunteer of the Year
  • Employees of Scottish Canals are not eligible for nomination, but those volunteers working on a Scottish Canal sponsored programme are eligible for nomination.
  • The nominated candidate will be required to support a media release and photo opportunity should he or she be selected for a short list or as the eventual winner.
  • The judge’s decision will be final

Email Submission Guidelines

In addition to the above guidance notes, email submissions should follow the email submission guidelines ....

  • The nominator must provide their contact information, including email address and telephone number
  • Nominator must provide the contact information, including email address and telephone number for the nominated Volunteer of the Year
  • Entries should include a short (500 word max) text submission explaining why the nominee should be considered for the Volunteer of the Year award.
  • A maximum of three images may be attached to the email submission to demonstrate why the nominee warrants consideration.
  • Emails received after the above stated deadline can not be considered.
